Flamenco Arts
Lia Ochoa and Teachers at PS 70, Bronx
In 2005 the United States Department of Education awarded Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana a prestigious grant—Professional Development for Arts Educators. The grant funded a three-year Professional Development program integrating flamenco and Spanish Dance into arts-based elementary education.
We teamed up with famed arts education innovator Mitchell Korn and PS 70 Elementary School in the Bronx, NY to develop the ground-breaking program Flamenco Arts for Teachers. Project Olé residencies have been a fixture at PS 70 since 2003 where we have taught students an appreciation of Hispanic culture through the hands-on teaching of Spanish dance. This familiarity made it a perfect partner school to develop Flamenco Arts for Teachers.
The program equips Teachers to use Spanish music and dance to enhance classroom learning in core subjects such as literacy, math, and science. A series of workshops integrates music and dance into general classroom subjects, and adhere to New York State and New York City learning standards.
Teachers at PS 70, Bronx
Flamenco Arts for Teachers is a proven success. Teachers come away from our workshops with practical, exciting, easily implemented lesson plans, and all of the supplies required to teach them. The integration of the arts in core subjects gives them an inspiring way to reach their students while adhering to required curriculum standards.
Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana is proud to be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. This support proves that flamenco is a valuable teaching tool that enhances education for students as well as educators.
